new sock for running and widsurfing protect feet with kevlar

Post by dean on Mon Feb 13, 2012 8:35 am

http://www.gizmag.com/furry-sock-shoes/21397/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&utm_campaign=9b00274451-UA-2235360-4&utm_medium=email

The socks get their claims of toughness from a blend of 50 percent Kevlar (that's the stuff they make bulletproof jackets out of), 32 percent polyester, 10 percent cotton and 8 percent Spandex. The soles are laminated with naps of PVC that Swiss Barefoot says makes them cut-resistant.

Interestingly, Swiss Barefoot doesn't just see these as useful for walking around your garden or getting the paper in the morning. In its video and photos, the company depicts all types of activities, including running, rock climbing and water sports.

The socks sell for 55 euro (US$73) for the short version and 59 euro ($78) for the longs. Take a look at the video below for a little more information, and footage of people using their Protection Socks.

Biggest radiation storm since 2005 headed for Earth

Biggest radiation storm since 2005 headed for Earth

http://www.gizmag.com/radiation-storm-headed-for-earth/21200/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&utm_campaign=696301f8d0-UA-2235360-4&utm_medium=email
Lock up your satellites and batten down your power-lines because a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is headed our way. According to the National Weather Service's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), it is the strongest Solar Radiation Storm since May, 2005. According to NASA, the CME is moving at almost 1,400 miles per second (2,253 km/s) and will reach the Earth's magnetosphere as early as 9 a.m. US EST on Tuesday, January 24 - give or take seven hours.

NASA says the radiation storm, which is ranked as an S3 (strong) event, is the result of an M8.7 class solar flare that erupted late on January 22, sending a CME and a burst of fast moving, highly energetic protons known as a "solar energetic particle" event towards the Earth. With the arrival of the CME, the SWPC forecasts G2 (Moderate) level geomagnetic storming, with G3 (Strong) levels possible. It expects the "enhanced conditions" to last through Wednesday.

The burst of solar wind has the potential to cause isolated reboots of computers on board satellites, damage power lines, and disrupt radio transmissions. It can also expose those in space or at high altitudes - in an airplane, for example - to intense radiation. There have already been reports of flights over the North Pole being rerouted and no launches into space are expected for the duration of the event for this reason.

On the upside, the collision of the energetic charged particles with atoms in the thermosphere is likely to result in quite the light show with particularly strong aurorae around the Arctic Circle likely.

Clothing, television screens, appliances, alcohol and 200 other goods will no longer be levied an import tax in Baja California Sur, after the declaration of a Border Economic Zone covering the entire peninsula.
On Friday, President Calderon and his economy minister, Antonio Meade signed in Tijuana a decree for the competitiveness and tariff reduction.

With this decree, coupled with the recent release from import duty of 204 other items, products that come not only from America but from Asia may be had at more competitive prices for local merchants.
Canned fish, articles for health care, clothing, footwear, big screens, wines and spirits, among others, are products whose tariffs will be reduced and also allow labeling at point of sale and not in the area input allowing further lower marketing costs

Mexico inaugurates world's highest cable-stayed bridge

Post by dean on Thu Jan 19, 2012 6:42 pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-16434200

The 403m (1,321ft) tall Baluarte bridge spans a deep ravine in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in the north.

It is part of a new highway crossing some of Mexico's most rugged terrain, from Mazatlan on the Pacific Coast to Durango in the interior.

The cable-stayed bridge is so tall that the Eiffel Tower would easily fit under its central span.

Last year we watched the eagles hatching and feeding their eaglets on live streaming video at www.raptorresource.org . First egg laid last year was 2/23, so it should be about another month before there is much to see with the eagles. In the meantime, check out the live streaming video of bears in their dens at www.bear.org. We will be able to see them give birth and take care of their cubs. Here is an interesting article from the New York times about something close to home. Organic farming in Todos Santos.

Organic Agriculture May Be Outgrowing Its Ideals

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/31/science/earth/questions-about-organic-produce-and-sustainability.html?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=tha2

TODOS SANTOS, Mexico — Clamshell containers on supermarket shelves in the United States may depict verdant fields, tangles of vines and ruby red tomatoes. But at this time of year, the tomatoes, peppers and basil certified as organic by the Agriculture Department often hail from the Mexican desert, and are nurtured with intensive irrigation.

KiteGen looks to get wind-power off the ground

Post by dean on Mon Dec 19, 2011 11:31 am

http://www.gizmag.com/kitegen-high-altitude-wind-turbine/20335/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&utm_campaign=bf11794e6c-UA-2235360-4&utm_medium=email

KiteGen looks to get wind-power off the ground

Wind-power has rapidly evolved over the last decade to become a key part of the alternative energy mix with towering rows of turbines now dotting horizons all over the globe. One of the drawbacks to the conventional windmill approach is that they are still low to the ground, so why not go to where the winds are stronger and more consistent - up. Like the Magenn Air Rotor System, KiteGen technology is aiming to do just that. The system generates energy by guiding tethered kites over a predefined flight path in order to rotate a ground based turbine and, while only in the testing and planning phases, it looks to be a promising solution. The large wings (or kites) in the KiteGen system are driven by avionic sensors located in a dome base that also houses an electric generator. The control system is designed to automatically guide the kites in order to rotate the turbine and maximize torque. As altitude increases, average wind speeds increase as well. This is a factor that traditional wind turbines cannot compete against, since they are stationary and are generally only able to reach heights of 100m.

inflatable tent

Camping can be fun but to be honest, tents are a pain. The romance of carrying your accommodations with you and the excitement of arriving at a new destination can both be swiftly tempered by reality. Erecting your tent using bent aluminum poles, bits of string, damp plastic sheeting and too few pegs becomes old very quickly. Add in pitch darkness and/or rain and the temptation to head for the nearest dodgy hotel can become irresistible. It doesn't have to be that way. Eight years ago two Stefan's from Germany had an idea for a better tent - and now it's here. Time to erect - 1 minute.

world corruption index

Post by dean on Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:51 am

2011 Transparency International CPI Report shows 80% of humans live under corrupt government
“Corruption” is defined by Transparency International (TI) as “the abuse of entrusted power for private gain.” Each year TI publishes a “Corruption Perceptions Index” which scores the world's nations out of ten for their public sector honesty and the just-released 2011 report paints a bleak picture. Only six countries scored 9.0 or better, and just 49 of the 186 countries assessed in the report scored better than 5.0. Analysis shows more than 80% of human beings on Planet Earth exist under regimes which score 4.0 or less. December 9 is World Anti-Corruption Day.

turkey link

Post by dean on Thu Nov 24, 2011 5:38 am

http://www.eatturkey.com/consumer/cookinfo/stuffing.html

Stuffing Tips from the National Turkey Federation

The National Turkey Federation recommends that stuffing be prepared and stuffed into the turkey immediately before it's placed in the oven for cooking. When making stuffing ahead of time, wet and dry ingredients should be refrigerated separately and combined right before stuffing the turkey. Turkeys should be stuffed loosely, with about 3/4 cup of stuffing per pound of turkey.

Use these two simple steps for determining when a stuffed roasted turkey is done cooking and safe to eat:

Insert a meat thermometer into the deepest portion of the thigh, not touching bone, and allow it to come to temperature for an accurate reading. Cook the turkey until the temperature when measured in the thigh reaches 180 degrees F. (When cooking a stuffed turkey breast, the temperature measured in the breast should be 170 degrees F.)
Move the thermometer to the center of the stuffing. Once the stuffing has reached 160 to 165 degrees F, the turkey should be removed from the oven and allowed to "rest" for 20 minutes. This makes carving easier and allows stuffing temperature to continue to rise to at least 165 degrees F.

If the turkey comes with a pop-up timer, a meat thermometer should still be used to check the temperature in the stuffing.

Roasting Turkey Cook until temperature reaches 170 degrees F in the breast and 180 degrees F in the thigh. Cooking times are for planning purposes only - always use a meat thermometer to determine doneness.

(Approximate Timetable for Roasting a Turkey at 325 degrees F)
Unstuffed Turkey
8 to 12 pounds 2 3/4 to 3 hours
12 to 14 pounds 3 to 3 3/4 hours
14 to 18 pounds 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 hours
18 to 20 pounds 4 1/4 to 4 1/2 hours
20 to 24 pounds 4 1/2 to 5 hours
24 to 30 pounds 5 to 5 1/4 hours

Stuffed Turkey
8 to 12 pounds 3 to 3 1/2 hours
12 to 14 pounds 3 1/2 to 4 hours
14 to 18 pounds 4 to 4 1/4 hours
18 to 20 pounds 4 1/4 to 4 3/4 hours
20 to 24 pounds 4 3/4 to 5 1/4 hours
24 to 30 pounds 5 1/4 to 6 1/4hours

Autonomous Wave Gliders begin their Pacific crossing

Autonomous Wave Gliders begin their Pacific crossing
It may sound like the premise for the latest Pixar movie, but it's actually happening - four small autonomous aquatic robots have embarked on a 60,000-kilometer (37,000-mile) journey across the Pacific ocean. The Wave Gliders, built by California-based Liquid Robotics, left San Francisco last Thursday. All four will travel together to Hawaii, at which point they will split into two pairs - one of those pairs will proceed to Australia, with the other heading for Japan. Called PacX (for "Pacific Crossing"), the project will constitute the longest voyage ever completed by an unmanned ocean vessel.

VESTAS Sailrocket 2 sets its sights on world speed sailing record

If floating along in a boat propelled only by the gentle push of an ocean breeze is your idea of relaxing, then you might want to steer clear of the aptly named VESTAS Sailrocket 2. Designed and built from the ground up with a focus on speed, the boat and the VSR2 team have headed to Walvis Bay in Namibia with the aim of breaking the outright world speed sailing record for the short distance 500 meters (1,640 ft) of 55.65 knots (64 mph/103 km/h) set in October 2010 by American kite-surfer, Rob Douglas.

road from the T to the edge of town

Post by dean on Thu Nov 10, 2011 8:24 pm

here are the pictures of the road work that was just finished. my guess is they will do a seal coat over this.

this one is finished both sides

this one you can see the paver in the distance as they are paving the sides. as I said looks like a few additional inches and repairing the edges to make it a safer road.

more paving of the road from LV to the turnoff

Post by dean on Wed Nov 09, 2011 7:22 pm

they were paving from LV all the way to the T intersection, not a think one like the one here in town but they widened the road by a few inches. no pavement added to the middle of the road. So instead of being crowned it is now flat and as mentioned 3 or so inches wider. I will post a pictures later.

and they are getting ready to put lines on the road...

low cost pool water pump

Post by dean on Tue Nov 08, 2011 7:30 pm

My concept is to use this low cost design for a pool pump. attach a belt and hook it to a car water pump.

wind

Post by dean on Tue Nov 08, 2011 10:58 am

since iwindsurf is down for our area try my neighbors, but his has always been about 30% low. but at least you can see it is blowing. low because the house blocks the sensor.

I can tell you it is a strong el norte today and yesterday was also good. yesterday sand was blowing at ankle height. today it should be at calf. today it started very early before we woke up.
